Dead frogs

Postby alison on Thu Apr 19, 2007 11:03 pm

I have had 2 dead frogs near the pond in the last couple of weeks. I cannot see any form of injury but they have both been adults of maybe 3 years old and they look very dried out. The one I found yesterday hadn't been there the day before yet it looked like it could have been dead for ages. I wonder what has happened. I don't usually come across any dead frogs so it has been worrying.
I haven't seen any of the frogs with the lumps like last year. All of the frogs look very healthy.
Anyone else had any problems?

How long can a frog live, and how do you tell roughly how old it is?

I'm not sure how long, but newts I think can be over 10 years old. Lots of info on the Froglife website here:

You could email them a photo of the frogs along with your location as they like to track dead and diseased frogs.

Is there any chance they could have been lobbed over your fence by you neighbour? Or dug up by a fox or dog from rough grass?

By the way, in this region it has been very dry for several weeks until yesterday- I wonder if this could have been a problem.
