This afternoon while watching the fish at feeding time I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw a brilliantly coloured fish, no more than an inch or so long, flash up to nibble on a food pellet. It is small but has beautiful markings of bright red, silver and black - a shubunkin without a doubt. A minute or two later there was bobbing under the food and I then saw two more fry both dark anthracite grey nibbling on the food while the bigger fish were doing other things . I sat glued to my stool hoping to see even more, but for today there were only the three. They can't be more than a few weeks old. The pond didn't get cleaned and refilled till 26th June. I am just so thrilled. I now have the four indoors which are growing apace and at least three in the pond, so all being well the total count will be 18 come next Spring when I return my indoor babies to the pond.
That my fish are actually breeding after all the trauma they've been through this summer I find amazing . Ah! life is good!
