I can't believe it, but they are still flowering beautifully. I had bought a nice large glazed pot and wanted something to show off in it. They have done the job brilliantly. It is lovely to come out of the house and see such colour. The rain today has dampened them down a bit now and after yesterdays winds they are not their best, but I bet in a day or so they will be wonderful again.
Dont forget they are not hardy, they will need a dry place for winter, keep the frost away and they should last a while, but even if the top died off they should regrow next year, but save a few of the seeds and add to them, make a bigger show next year.
Alan where can I keep them for the winter. I don't have a greenhouse or anything. Can they be kept in the dark in a shed? Do I need to take them out of the pot and just keep the tubers?
To be honest Alison I dont know if it would be ok in a shed, I kept mine in a greenhouse with just enough heat to keep it frost free, but its worth a try in the shed, wrap it in some fleece, it might work, but save the seeds at least oyu can grow some more next year if not
Hi,
I've kept my tubers in the garage before now, near a window, or in the greenhouse. One thing you need to do is make sure they are nice and dry as there's nothing worse then getting them out after winter and finding the tubers have gone mouldy and unusable. I'd recommend dusting the tubers with green sulphur powder if you can- helps reduce the fungal damage.....
Hope this helps
Almost forgot - tell anyone who will be doing any well-meaning tidying that the dead looking things are not to be binned (bitter experience has taught me this!
It is still flowering beautifully today, but I will do as you say when it is time to pull them up. My neighbour has a greenhouse which she may let me put my tubers in. If not I will try the shed. Do they need light because my shed doesn't have a window?
they flower until the first frost alison, but if its a hard first frost the never flower again, if possible i would pop them under an over hanging plant or somthing, just to keep the frost off them.
